Sharon Ann Smith

December 11, 1943 — June 23, 2023

Benbrook

Sharon Ann Smith-Hinson, age 79, of Fort Worth, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 23, 2023, with her loving family by her side.

She was born to the late C.D. and Earline Sealey on December 11, 1943 in Fort Worth. Sharon and her family lived in many places as she grew up but she met lifelong friends and her spouse, Woody Hinson, on Dilworth Court in Fort Worth when she was in the fourth grade. She graduated from Poly High School in 1962. Her daughter, Lisa, was born in 1965 and there began a lifelong passion and devotion as a mother. Sharon worked at General Dynamics and traveled to the Philippines and Puerto Rico before returning to Texas. She earned her Associate’s Degree from Tarrant County Junior College, and her Bachelor’s Degree from Texas Wesleyan College.  Sharon was the top graduate in her class at TWC.

Sharon worked with the School for the Deaf and then as a Special Education teacher for the FWISD. She returned to college at the University of North Texas to receive her Master's Degree and certification to become a Special Education Diagnostician for FWISD. Sharon was dedicated to her work and to the children and parents she worked with over the years. She was a friend and mentor to many peers over the course of her 36 year career. When she retired in 2008, she left a legacy of a job well done, and big shoes to fill.

In 1993 Sharon became Gigi when her grandson, Drew, was born.  From him she would learn about trains, video games, and Legos. She attended countless soccer games, choir concerts, musicals, award ceremonies, and any important event for Drew. To say she loved him isn’t enough to describe their relationship and her unconditional love for him.

Sharon loved to run and made many friends over training runs and races. She completed her first full marathon in 2014 at age 70. She was an inspiration to many, not only for her speed, but for her perseverance in finishing every race. Sharon would never have told you, but she won her age category in many of those races.

Sharon will be remembered as a valued wife, a loving mom and Gigi, a supportive big sister, a true friend, a runner, a lover of art and a good glass of wine, and for her strength and spirit.

She is survived by her husband, Woody Hinson; daughter, Lisa Gossard; grandson, Drew and his wife, Cameron; her sister, Kay Vanderbilt, and her children, Larry, Randy, and Angela, and their families; her bonus mother, Jo Sealey, and the Mims family; her sisters-in-law, Kitty Volburg, and Virginia Weems, and their families; and an  extended family, dear friends, and co-workers.

A celebration of Sharon’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 30th at Winscott Road Funeral Home, 1001 Winscott Road, Benbrook, Texas 76126.
