Michael “Mike” Louis Akin, a resident of Sunrise Community of Fort Worth, Texas passed away on February 28, 2021 at the age of 62.
Services: As a proud U.S. Army Veteran he will be interred at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas at a later date.
Mike was born on May 30, 1958 at Fort Knox, Kentucky preceding his twin brother Mark by six minutes. After numerous moves across the country and to international U.S. Army posts, Mike graduated high school at Carlisle, PA. He joined the U.S. Army in May of 1980 completing the U.S. Army Infantryman Course and Jungle Training and was later reclassified into the Transportation Corps as a watercraft operator. Mike served in Germany and in the Multinational Force in the Sinai as an infantryman. Mike was stationed with the 97th Trans (Heavy Boat) Company Fort Eustis, Virginia on a Landing Craft Utility where he supported numerous training exercises. Mike earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Multi-National Forces and Observer Medal and the M-16 Rifle Qualification Badge. Mike was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in April of 1987 and continued to work in the service and security industries until his retirement in 2017.
He was a Soldier, son, brother and uncle who demonstrated unsurpassed perseverance in service to his country and community. A true patriot, Mike also had a great love for most genre of music and an encyclopedic memory of movies, music and literature. His engaging smile, laugh and his unique sense of adventure will be fondly remembered and missed by his surviving family and friends.
Mike was predeceased by his beloved father MG (R) George Akin.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Evelyn Graves Akin, and his siblings, Cynthia (James) House, Mark (Erin) Akin and Greg (Robin) Akin and seven nieces and nephews.
