Jimmy Don Smith, age 78, of Benbrook, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025, at Texas Health Resources Fort Worth.
Born in Whitesboro, Texas, on November 16, 1946, Jimmy was the son of Edgar Jack and Shirley Inez (Midgett) Smith. He dedicated his life to his family, his country, his career, and his community.
Jimmy graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1965 and looked forward to attending his class reunions, where he loved reconnecting with former classmates. After high school, Jimmy proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years, achieving the rank of E5-SSGT. He completed his basic training in Amarillo, Texas, and worked as a meteorologist. During his service, he was stationed in Tripoli, Libya, North Africa, and at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia.
After his military service, Jimmy married Virginia Wolf on August 25, 1973, and they settled in Fort Worth, Texas. He built a successful career as an engineer, working for General Dynamics and Vaught Aircraft, where he retired after more than 30 years of dedicated service. Jimmy was also a committed volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, helping both of his sons achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
Known for hosting family gatherings and always bringing humor to the table, Jimmy was the kind of person who was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. A loving husband, father, grandpa, son, brother and uncle, he treasured creating lasting memories with his family, often at Lake Texoma or Lake Granbury.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Inez Smith; his siblings, Jackie Kay (Johnny) VanBevers and Theresa Gail Smith; sister-in-law, Donna Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Virginia (Wolf) Smith; his two children, Bryan Smith and wife Jennifer; Kevin Smith; and his five grandchildren, Landon, Dylan, Tristan, Lisa and Kelly. He is also survived by his two brothers, Danny Smith of Watauga, Larry (Teresa) Smith of Whitesboro, and sister, Annette (Gary) Workman of Gainesville, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family members who will miss him deeply.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who provided exceptional care in his final days.
In honor of Jimmy’s brave commitment, his ashes will be interred at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, where he will rest among great fellows, forever remembered and cherished.
May his memory live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy of service, love, and compassion will live on in the hearts of his family and all those whose lives he touched.
