After living a long and beautifully blessed life, Cora Curlee Cuthbertson, affectionately and lovingly known by her family as “Nonna”, was called to her heavenly home on June 11, 2021.
Services: Cora will join her husband and be entombed at Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday, June 18th, 2021, at 1:00pm, under the direction of McEwen Funeral Home in North Carolina.
Cora was born May 6, 1920 in Matthews, North Carolina to Burta Smith Curlee and Samuel T. Curlee. Cora was one of six children, all whom she loved dearly. Cora met her husband, Carl Cuthbertson, Sr., when they were both in the 8th grade. She attended Oakhurst Elementary, Middle, and High School where she excelled in mathematics, and was an integral part of the basketball team.
Cora and Carl were married on June 15, 1940, and soon thereafter Carl went overseas to fight in World War II with the United States Navy. Cora remained behind, among many things working in an aircraft factory in New Orleans, Louisiana while also helping to support the war effort. Upon returning from overseas, Cora and Carl would have their first child, named Carla. Carla was born sleeping on June 16, 1943. Shortly thereafter, Cora and Carl would have their second child, Carl Cuthbertson, Jr. Eight years later, their last child, Cheryl Gaye Cuthbertson would be born. Cora and Carl would go on to build a beautiful life with their children, living in Charlotte, North Carolina; Pickens, Mississippi; Martinsville, Virginia; and Greenville, South Carolina, before finally making Fort Worth, Texas their last earthly home together.
While living in South Carolina, Cora was very active in her church community and was a master seamstress. Cora was known for her sewing and dress-making skills and was enthusiastically involved in creating the pageant gowns that were worn in the Miss South Carolina pageants. Her hand-crafted work was also featured when the reigning Miss South Carolina went on to compete in the Miss America Pageant in 1972.
Cora’s drive, ambition, and unsurpassed work ethic led her into a multi-decade career in real estate that began at the age of 55. She commenced working in real estate while living in Greenville, South Carolina. When the opportunity arose, she and Carl moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1978. After working for three different real estate companies from 1978, she ultimately retired from real estate at the age of 94. Right up until her retirement, she was actively mentoring other real estate agents while passing along her vast knowledge to the next generation of realtors in the Fort Worth area. Cora was a consistent, multi-million-dollar, top producing agent throughout her real estate career. She developed trusted relationships with many of the elite builders within the Fort Worth real estate community. Cora had numerous customers consistently return to her for their home-buying/selling needs again and again. Cora never met a stranger and made everyone that came into her presence feel like one of her own family. She was trusted and sought after for many years because of her expertise in the real estate industry in Fort Worth.
As dedicated as Cora was to her real estate career, nothing could ever compare to the devotion and unfailing love that she had for her family. Cora’s seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren were the absolute highlight of her life. Cora developed very close bonds with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the love that they all shared will last into eternity because of the commitment that Nonna had to endearingly developing those relationships. Cora absolutely loved holidays; decorating was one of her most treasured things. Christmas was always a magical experience when Nonna’s touch was involved! Cooking and baking were also one of the many talents and skills of this exceptional woman. Many of her recipes have been handed down to her grandchildren and they will continue to be cherished for generations to come.
Above all, we thank our Lord and Savior for the treasured gift of Cora’s life. She was such an incalculable blessing to countless other lives during her 101 years on this earth. Anyone who was fortunate to have known her would agree that being in her presence would forevermore change you for the better. Her brilliant, bright smile and the twinkle in her beautiful, blue eyes would instantly light up any room. She would always be the first to give God all the glory for her beautiful, long life, the many successes she had experienced, and being her salvation and strength in times of need. For His faithfulness to her, we are endlessly thankful.
